DIY: Elf Wreath

It’s just under 6 weeks until Christmas so it’s now perfectly acceptable to (slowly) start turning your home into a Christmas Wonderland. This Elf Wreath will add a fun touch to any door.

You’ll need:

  • Wire wreath frame
  • Elf slippers
  • Elf socks/stripey tights
  • Elf hat
  • 3 meters of coloured mesh
  • Assorted ribbon (2-3 meters each)
  • 12 baubles
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Newspaper
  • Glue gun

Step 1: Loop the Pipe Cleaners

Fold the pipe cleaners in half and loop through the inner and outer wire frame. You should have 6 per ring. Make sure they’re pulled tight otherwise the mesh won’t hold.

Step 2: Attach the Mesh

Create a hem by folding down the raw edge of the mesh, around 6 inches should do the trick. Starting with the inner row, gather the hem and twist the first pipe cleaner around it to secure in place. Create a puff and secure with the next pipe cleaner. Once you’ve finished the inner ring, attach the mesh to the first pipe cleaner you secured in place then simply carry the mesh over to the closest pipe cleaner on the outer ring. Continue until the entire wreath is covered. Don’t worry about the edge you cut being visible, this will be covered by the hat.

Step 3: Attach the Ribbon

Using the same technique as the mesh, attach the ribbon to the wreath by securing in place with the pipe cleaners. I used different ribbon on the inner and outer rings, so when I finished the inner ring I cut the ribbon and pulled the ends through to the back of the wreath so they wouldn’t be seen. Start attaching the ribbon to the outer ring at the same point where you cut the mesh, finish at this point as well so the hat will cover the raw edges.

Step 4: Add the Baubles

Loop one end of the pipe cleaner through the bauble and pull the two ends through to the back. Tightly twist so the bauble is nice and secure.

 Step 5:

Glue two pipe cleaners to the sides of the hat and two down the sides of each of the socks. Using a glue gun add a blob to the bottom of the socks and glue to the inside of the slippers, stuff the hat and the socks with newspaper to add a little shape. Attach the hat to the top of the wreath a little off center, pull the ends of the pipe cleaners to the back of the wreath and twist tightly to secure in place. Do the same with the socks at the bottom of the wreath.
